For fours years I researched all about the Gastric Band. I even made and appointment in Union Quay (the Cosmetic Clinic). I spoke with a lady in Belgium whom I found on the internet. I was gearing up to go abroad to have this surgery done. But my main worry was After Care .  I knew, being a Health Care Assistant, that this would be of high importance.

Yesterday I bought my first ever River Island dress - a floaty number with a short skirt. I was mindful of the fact that River Island sizing is small, so I chose a size "L" and didn't bother trying it on as it was just Ä18 in their sale. When I got around to "modelling" it later last night I was astonished to find it was way too big!! Seven stone lighter than I was just seven months ago, I simply have to realise that I'm no longer a big girl!!

John Kelleher

My name is John Kelleher I am 59 years of age I had to retire 6 years ago due to ill health, a heart attack, quadruple bypass surgery, and a stroke, all in a short period of time. I am also a type 2 diabetic for the last couple of years. I have struggled with my weight and during this period. I lost control of my diabetes which caused all sorts of other problems. My GP must have thought I was stalking him because every time he turned around I was there.

It was suggested I meet with Professor Brendan Buckley and after a long chat he indicated that my problems could be looked at differently and suggested I meet with Colm O Boyle. It was the best days work I ever did. It was decided that surgical intervention was needed. I had my gastric bypass in late February 2011. I am 17 months down the road and have lost 7 stone my BMI was 41.3 Weight was 140.6kg now BMI is 29.9 and weight is 101.1kg [waste was 50”+ now 40” neck 22”now16”].

This procedure has turned my life around for the better I am only sorry we didn’t go down this rout earlier.

My thanks to Mr O Boyle, Diarmuid, Catriona and all the rest of the team.

Philip Newton, Clonakilty, Co. Cork

On the 5th October 2011 I went for my Gastric Bypass operation, the operation was a huge success and I feel that the results speak for themselves. I have struggled with my weight all my life and after seeing a consultant cardiologist in January 2011 about chest pains I was given the all clear but was warned that it wouldn't last for ever and at 50 years old, 5ft 6Ĺ and 21 stone I was a heart attack waiting to happen not to mention other possible medical conditions. The consultant cardiologist referred me to Colm O'Boyle and the rest, as they say, is history. It is now just over six months since the operation at the writing of this and I am just 3 weeks away from running my first half marathon with several other smaller races under my belt already and looking forward to running a full marathon here in Clonakilty by the end of the year. My only regret is that I didn't have the operation ten years ago; my quality of life has gone through the roof. I no longer have to ask for a seat belt extension when I fly, I can fasten my shoe laces without getting out of breath, I can get into the shower without first having to squeeze my stomach in followed by the rest of my body and even better I can wear clothes that look good and not just fit, my food bill has also dropped by about Ä75 per week. I no longer waddle down the road, I swagger with confidence and I have so much more energy I feel that I want to run every where. My two dogs are a lot happier as well, not to mention fitter.

A truly life changing operation

In January 2011, tired of being overweight and depressed at the prospect of living my life that way, a friend of mine handed me an article in a newspaper about Gastric bypasses. Somewhat sceptical, I had tried every other means of weight loss, from Weight Watchers, Weight Motivation to a very expensive clinic in Dublin which provided "Shakes", nothing had worked for me. I had put on a lot of weight in my thirties, mostly through stress, working for a multinational in a job that was incredibly demanding, and I fed my stress with food to a point where I couldn't lose the excess weight.

I'd heard everything, you've no will power, you haven't tried, but my eating had an emotional root and as long as I could eat I would, and I constantly walked down the nightmare road of viscous circle dieting, diet, binge, diet binge. With Type II diabetes it was no longer a case of I'll start tomorrow, but Dr's constantly warning me of the truly horrible consequences I was facing if I didn't face up to and conquer my eating issues.

After talking to my GP who was wholeheartedly behind the operation, I heard of the Gastric Bypass surgery at the Bons Secours. I met with Mr. O'Boyle, his matter of fact, no-nonsense professional approach was very encouraging. But I'd been encouraged before, only to fall at the last fence. I signed up to a battery of pre-medical tests in the Bons Secours in Cork under Mr. O'Boyle's care. If I had any doubts they were immediately dispelled. A day of intensive medical testing was carried out in what can only be described as military precision. The medical attention and care was second to none. By this stage I was one hundred per cent committed to the operation.

Mr. O'Boyle's team at the Bons Secours follow an all encompassing approach to this surgery which includes meetings with your Surgeon Ė Mr. O'Boyle, Dietician's, Physio's and a Counsellor. This pre- and post operative approach coupled with a support group gives you constant access to all the information you need before and support after surgery. In addition, the stringent pre-med means you are 100% fit for surgery and certainly erased any doubts and answered many questions I had.

The surgery is a big operation, the word "keyhole" is a bit of a red-herring. Time and time again I've been told by GP's that this is something that is only done by very skilled surgeons and is an extremely big operation. Even though I am living near Dublin, the quality of care under Mr O'Boyle and his team was second to none, and a short 2 and a half hour trip for this major surgery is a small journey for the medical expertise I benefitted from. The special care during and after the operation was exceptional and follow up appointments were made for very shortly after my surgery which was extremely beneficial.

My type II diabetes has all but gone. I am not long after the operation, but I have already lost a considerable amount of weight, something I could not dream of before. I look and feel one thousand per cent better. Not only has the operation taken multiple kgs off my, it as dialled back the clock in terms of how old I feel and look.

So why does this work when nothing else did? Because my eating is controlled for me. I didn't have the will power, plus with the type II diabetes allowed myself to cave to sugar cravings constantly. Now I follow a stringent, but tasty diet, and I actually feel full for the first time in years. I would strongly recommend Mr O'Boyle and his team and this operation as the only real solution to permanent weight loss for those who are obese. This operation is literally life saving and life changing!

I had my Gastric bypass surgery on the 30th of March 2011. I have lost almost 6 stone since then. The quality of my life compared with before the operation is so different. I feel alive for the first time in years. I have so much more energy and have even bought a bike!! I can buy clothes because I like them not just because they fit me! Going on holidays was such a joy this year, I was able to go swimming without dying of embarrassment, I was able to enjoy the sun and not pass out with the heat. The only regret I have it not having the operation sooner.

My name is Catriona - 29. I struggled with my weight for the past 8 years. I had tried Weightwatchers on numerous occasions, Lipotrim and good old calorie counting. I even tried the intragastric balloon six years ago. Each time I would lose a couple of pounds, finish the diet and gain them back again with a few extra pounds. As you can see by my pre-op picture I went up to a whopping 114kg.

I had the roux-en-y gastric bypass (and even better it is keyhole) on 19 June 2009. With the key hole there was a nice quick recovery. Since then I have gone down to 58kg. I have gone back to ballet and tap dancing. I have started kayaking and swimming. I am now doing all the stuff I was doing until I put on all the weight.

November 2009 after my own surgery I started up Cork Support Group for Weightloss Surgery for people who have underwent or who are undergoing surgery. They can come along by themselves or with family members to ask questions or just listen. It is a great place to come if they have any worries and to get comfort if they are struggling. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month and have a great chat.

Michael Linehan

My Name is Michael Linehan. I am a 50 year old male and have struggled with weight management for the last 20 years. In the last 10 years alone I have put on 50kg (nearly 8st) and my health had suffered because of this.

Many times I had tried different diets with different levels of success. But always I put on more weight than I had lost. During the last 18 months my heart cried enough and I suffered from chronic heart disease and was not doing well. While in hospital I was visited by Mr Colm O Boyle who recommended that I have a Gastric Bypass (at this time I weighed 151kg).

On the 10th May 2011, Mr O Boyle carried out a Gastric Bypass and the difference it has made to my life is unbelievable. In less than 4 months, my weight has fallen from 151kg to 115kg and I am feeling so much better. Before the op, I would be breathless from walking up the stairs and now I walk my dog 4-8 kilometres a day. Everyone who meets me, comments on how well I look and I wear clothes that I grew out of 5 years ago. Mr O Boyle feels I can/Will lose another 20-30kg over the next 6 months.

This year on holidays, I took my shirt off at the pool for the first time in years.

Best reward of all, is the fact that I can look forward to a longer life ( I had made up my mind that I would be dead by the time I reached 55), be in better shape and enjoy all the benefits of having a healthy weight. To finish, Thanks to Mr Colm O Boyle and his entire team. You have made a new man of me.

John. Aged 65. - I underwent laparoscopic gastric bypass in June 2008. Preoperatively my Body Mass Index was over 40kg/m2. I had been a diabetic for 5 years and was taking insulin and other antidiabetic medications. After my surgery I left hospital off all antidiabetic treatment and am no longer troubled by diabetes. I have also stopped taking blood pressure medications. My energy levels are hugely increased. My sleeping is much better. My back pain is much improved. It is over 21/2 years since my operation and I have lost and maintained 82lbs or 75% of my excess weight. My BMI is now 29kg/m2. Having the surgery is the best thing I ever did.

My name is Anne, I am 46 years old. I have struggled with my weight for over 25 years. In the last 10 years it had become very difficult. I had tried Weightwatchers, Lipotrim, Herbalife, and plain old "cutting back". I failed every time. I became very despondent and quite withdrawn socially.

I eventually gave serious consideration to having Bariatric surgery. I consulted my G.P. and asked him to refer me to a reputable Consultant.

I had a Gastric Roux - en - Y bypass on 24th March 2010, and my life has changed so much. It really was like being reborn. I have already lost almost 6 stone. I have so much more energy, I feel so much better, and I am off my blood pressure medication. I love life now, and there is nothing I cannot do. I enjoy each and every day. I enjoy setting myself new challenges, and the return to some old favourite hobbies, like horseriding. I am even going to buy a new bicycle!

If someone had told me 4 months ago, that I would have felt this good, I wouldn't have believed them. I am so glad that I have had this surgery. It has given me back my life.
